“Friend”, “Campus Icon”, “Inspiration” – all words that describe the late giant head of Paul Giamatti that went missing this summer. He made people laugh, cry and even scream in his years at UST and today, we attempt, with all likelihood in vain, to recover what has become a campus wide phenomenon. For those of you new to campus or who can’t remember all the way back to the 2006-2007 school year, here is a the story of Paul Giamatti head:
It was Fall of 2006 and a spirited young freshman moving from the Cheese State arrived on campus with a giant head of Paul Giamatti from the movie Sideways. Nobody exactly knows how the giant head of Paul Giamatti came to exist. Some say it was from the depths of Lake Michigan. Others say it he was dropped from the heavens as a gift to humanity. Most think he was found in the basement of a Blockbuster video store. Regardless, the giant head of Paul Giamatti moved into the St. Thomas campus right along with this young chap from Wisconsin.
The giant head of Paul Giamatti came to be known as he was placed in the window of a 1st floor Brady hall dorm room. He greeted students entering Koch Commons, sometimes with quite the startle if it was a dark Tuesday night. But after the initial shock of a giant head of Paul Giamatti staring you down subsided, he became quite the conversational piece. The giant head of Paul Giamatti drew much attention to Brady hall room 129. Gifts of Firecracker Chicken Wraps were plenty for the boys from the cheesehead state and it was all because of the giant head of Paul Giamatti.
After a year of serving as a symbol for freedom and the uninhibited lifestyle of college students, the giant head of Paul Giamatti moved to the basement of OEC – to hang in the studio of the hip and trendy campus radio station, KUST.
KUST accepted the giant head of Paul Giamatti with open arms and was hung in the studio directly in front of the mixing board, often times with a speech bubble attached, reminding DJs of announcements and that Father Dease in fact could be tuned in at that exact moment. He was loved by all and there was peace in the KUST studio because of the giant head of Paul Giamatti.
Fast forward to the summer of 2009. If the Aquin was still being published, it would read something like “EXTRA EXTRA! Read all about it! The giant head of Paul Giamatti was STOLEN from the KUST studio!”
That’s right, the giant head of Paul Giamatti was stolen! Such a friend, inspiration and campus icon needs to be recovered. If you or anyone you know has any details regarding the whereabouts of the giant head of Paul Giamatti, please contact anyone from KUST immediately and your efforts will be rewarded with CDs and a KUST t-shirt. Thank you, for all your efforts.
